Troubleshooting

1.  Unit does not seem to be working.
    1. To make sure the unit is functioning, turn on 3-4 faucets in your house and look at the Sterling Water Conditioner to see if the green indicator light on the unit is on.  When you turn the faucets off (making sure there is no other running water in the house) confirm that the green indicator light is off.
    2. If the green indicator light is on and you feel that the Sterling Water Conditioner is still not working properly, remove the Sterling Water Conditioner and perform the cleaning steps as outlined in your Installation Instructions.
    3. If the indicator light on the unit does not turn on, check the green light on the power supply and make sure that all the connections are fitted correctly.  If this does not correct the problem, call the plumber who installed the Sterling Water Conditioner.

2.  The flow and pressure seem lower than they were previously.

         1.  Remove the Sterling Water Conditioner and perform the cleaning steps as outlined in the
              Installation Instructions.
         2.  If this does not correct the problem, call the plumber who installed the Sterling Water
              Conditioner.

3.  The Sterling Water Conditioner is leaking.

Unplug the unit and call the plumber who installed the Sterling Water Conditioner.

4.  The local water softener representative came to the house and tested the water.  His tests show that the Sterling Water Conditioner is not doing anything to the water.
    1. The Sterling Water Conditioner does not add nor remove any chemicals or ionic elements into the water.  It changes the way that calcium carbonate crystallizes.
    2. When the water softener representative tests water for hardness, he uses a test that only measures the amount of calcium present in the water, not calcium carbonate.  Calcium and magnesium carbonate causes water hardness.
    3. A water softener removes calcium, magnesium and certain other non-hardness causing minerals from the water and typically replaces them with sodium.  The water hardness test will show that the calcium is significantly reduced.  However, because the test only indicates the presence of calcium in the water, this test will not work for water treated by a Sterling.  The calcium level will remain relatively constant.  Remember the Sterling Water Conditioner does not add or remove anything from the water, it changes the way the minerals react.
    4. Since the Sterling Water Conditioner does not use regenerating chemicals, such as sodium chloride or potassium chloride commonly used in water softeners, it does not have harmful effects on the environment.

5.  There are still water spots on the dishes and glasses.
    1. It is best to use powdered detergent (such as an Electrasol tablet).
    2. Make sure that the water temperature is less than 130 degrees F.  This will reduce the amount of soap residue on glasses and dishes.
    3. Using a rinse-aid will add shine to your glasses and dishes.  Using a solid rinse-aid is best, such as Jet Dry, which also comes in liquid form.
    4. Every couple of months, add a quart of white vinegar to the dishwasher and run the machine without any detergent or dishes.  This will help remove any water deposits off the inside of the dishwasher.
    5. Clean your Sterling Water Conditioner following the cleaning instructions outlined in your Installation Instructions.

6.  The green indicator light on the unit is staying on, even when there is no water running in the  house.
    1. Look at the Installation Instructions that came with your Sterling Water Conditioner and make sure the Sterling Water Conditioner is installed correctly.
    2. If the unit is installed incorrectly, unplug the unit and call the plumber who installed it making sure to specify that the light is constantly on and the unit is installed incorrectly.
    3. If the unit is installed correctly but the indicator light remains on, contact the plumber who installed the Sterling Water Conditioner.

7.  The plumber/installer did not leave a copy of the installation instructions or maintenance information.

    1. Go to http://www.sterling-water.com/SterlingWaterConditionerInstallationInstructionsandDiagram.cfm to view the information.

8.  The Sterling Water Conditioner used to work but now water spots are reappearing on surfaces.

    1. Make sure the electrical connections are secure and the green indicator light is working properly.
    2. Remove the Sterling Water Conditioner and perform the cleaning steps as outlined in the
      Installation Instructions.
